The Echos Of Hidden Worlds

I place my hand on the rough bark of a 100-year-old tree trunk. I close my eyes. I can feel the tingle in my hand, and the pulse of the leaf-littered earth run through my bare feet. The ground is damp, and the smell of the forest is deep and earthy. I wriggle my toes and dig the souls of my feet deeper into the wet earth. My body tells me it yearns to be planted, grounded, firm, and still while my roots travel communicating in the world below. This moment I am having cannot be seen nor heard. It is for me alone. Pure energy. I am energy. Everything that exists is energy.

I take a deep breath and open my eyes. I look over to my son, happily sitting by the clear running creek. I pause and smile. My child is so happy and content, throwing stones and peacefully watching the ripple effect in the water. I join him and place my feet in the cool running water. I pull from my bag a book published 30 years ago. This was a book I loved as a child. The cover brings back feelings of wonder and excitement. ‘Fern Gully’ filled my heart and fuelled my imagination. I always wished to live in this magical land filled with rainforest fairies and creatures and truly believed it existed somewhere.

And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it

Not so long ago, if I was to tell someone that tiny invisible bugs were crawling around all over their skin, I would have been instantly labeled a witch and hung. Back then, no one knew their skin was covered in bacteria and resembled one big playground for little creatures, but, they are very much there, we just can’t see them. I am amused as my feet move through the water. That playground on my skin has just turned into a massive waterpark for these little guys.

There are things all around us that we know exist, but we simply cannot see them due to limitations of static perception; how we perceive motion. Suppose something moves so fast that it whizzes past our frame of perception or is so small that it fails to make an impression in our conscious perception. In that case, we simply won’t be aware of its existence. To us, it does not exist at all.

As I look up into the tree canopy I can’t help but wonder what kinds of things may be in our presence but moving too quickly to be observed. I honestly believe things exist in our reality, but they are invisible to us. I know this because I can feel it, especially when disconnected from the outside noise and in nature. Perhaps we have been so programmed, disconnected, hypnotized, and medicated that our ability to ever experience these worlds is slowly fading away.

I cuddle my son close, open the book and begin to read. Perhaps at this moment, in the forest, by the creek, I really am in ‘Fern Gully.’
